Looking at developments in OECD economies, the distrust towards economists is understandable
The public’s confidence in “experts” has weakened, and this holds for economists, too. But it is important to understand the viewpoint of public opinion, or that of the “median voter”. In the economies of OECD countries, they see: T he skewing of income distribution against wage earners; Rising inequality and poverty; Mounting difficulties for young people; Declining potential growth and the slowdown in purchasing power gains; The shifting structure of employment towards low-skilled and poorly paid jobs; Much higher CO 2 emissions than would correspond to the commitments countries have made. Economists have of course advised none of this. But their credibility has been dented by the poor performance of economies .
