Monetary policy normalisation: It is too late, even in the United States

The Bank of Japan continues its policy aimed at stabilising the 10-year interest rate around 0%; the ECB will not start raising its interest rates before the third quarter of 2019. Only the Federal Reserve has announced that it wants to normalise its monetary policy, a choice that was confirmed by J erome Powell in Jackson Hole in August 2018. But we believe the monetary policy normalisation has started too late, even in the United States. The return to full employment will slow down the US economy, and growth will probably later fall below potential growth. It is then possible that the Federal Reserve’s interest rates will be hiked less in 2019 than what it is currently announcing, or even less than what the financial markets expect.
