Oil Market Faces OPEC Risks Both Near and Far

A disorderly OPEC+ deal exit is emerging as a key risk that could derail sustainable oil price recovery in 2021 . Whilst our base - case outlook still expects a three-month extension to be agreed on 3rd December, the group may find it difficult to meaningfully cooperate (and enforce compliance) beyond this extension for the remainder of the supply agreement, currently due to expire in mid-2022. Longer term, just as the coronavirus crisis has accelerated the energy transition plans of the European oil majors, the pandemic is likely to have accelerated resource monetisation strategies for NOCs with the ability to invest in additional production capacity .
