The “cost review” among companies
The COVID crisis has caused corporate earnings to plummet (we look at the United States and the euro zone). This is leading many companies to carry out a review of their production costs with a view to restoring their profitability. What to expect from this “ cost review ” ? Probably: A wage freeze; A virtual hiring freeze; A sharp reduction in travel; A reduction in needs for office space; Offshoring to low-labour-cost countries; Downward pressure on contractors’ prices. Economic f orecasts will have to take account of this cost review by companies.
