The great heterogeneity of demographic situations
We compare demographic situations in: The United States; The European Union; Japan; China; South Korea; Southeast Asian countries; India; Africa. There is a very large gap between fertility rates and population growth prospects between these countries: the population and working-age population are still growing quite rapidly in the United States, India and Southeast Asia and Africa; there is a demographic decline in the European Union, Japan, China and South Korea. When we look at productivity gains and potential growth, we see that productivity trends are exacerbating the decline in the working-age population in the European Union, South Korea and Japan.
