The key characteristics of today’s international monetary system

It is important to understand that today’s international monetary system is very different to that from the 1990s to 2013 . D uring that time , it was dominated by the bilateral and cooperative relationship between the United States and China and by capital flows heading into the US Treasury market ( this was known as “Bretton Woods 2”). Today, the international monetary system is dominated by: The non-cooperative bilateral relationship between the United States and the euro zone; Capital flows heading into equity markets and not just the US Treasury market.
