The key debate for capitalism

The key debate currently for capitalism is whether, under capitalism, it is possible to: Combat inequality; Sharply reduce CO 2 emissions. Some believe that the answer is no since, intrinsically, liberal capitalism (and, besides, also Chinese "state" capitalism), produces inequality and uses fossil energies by seek ing to maximise profits for shareholders. Others believe, on the contrary, that the answer is yes since seeking to maximise profits makes capitalistic companies very reactive; if governments give the right incentives (tax incentives to distribute productivity gains to employees, sufficiently high CO 2 price) , then companies will reduce inequality and their CO 2 emissions since it is necessary to increase their profits and their value for the shareholders. It seems clear that if this second approach is not used, then more and more voices will call for an end to capitalism.
