The return of toothpaste
In 1980, Karl Otto Pöhl, President of the Bundesbank, said: “ Inflation is like toothpaste: once it's out, you can hardly get it back in again. So the best thing is not to squeeze too hard on the tube. ” Are there signs today of a divergent inflation dynamics in the United States, the euro zone and the United Kingdom, which would imply that inflation is already too high today to be controlled? We see: A generally inflationary dynamics (expected inflation, rising wages, sharp rise in companies' selling prices) in the United States; A partially inflationary dynamics (expected inflation, wages in the euro zone, production prices) in Europe.
