The second half of Trump’s term is going to be much trickier than the first

In the second half of his term, after the mid-term elections, Donald Trump is going to be faced with: A slowdown in US growth due to the economy’s return to full employment (on the supply side) and the negative effects of protectionism and higher interest rates (on the demand side); A deterioration in the United States’ fiscal position due to the lower growth; The fact that the expansionary fiscal policy will lead to a deterioration in US foreign trade and, at full employment, will no longer boost growth; A fall in share prices due to the growth slowdown and the end of the temporary effects of the tax reform. Trump’s position in the eyes of public opinion, Congress and the business com munity will therefore be weakened.
