To ensure public debt sustainability, governments have two types of tax: Normal taxes; Hidden taxes. Hidden taxes now have two components: The tax levied on holders of public debt by the fact that long-term interest rates are lower than growth rates; Seigniorage (usual inflation tax) levied through inflation on holders of money. We look at the size of hidden taxation in the United States, the euro zone, the United Kingdom and Japan, compared to the size of normal taxation. We see that in the most recent period, hidden taxes have represent ed : 75% of normal taxes in the United States; 50% of normal taxes in the United Kingdom; 30% of normal taxes in the euro zone; 20% of normal taxes in Japan.
