Understanding the causes of the decline in manufacturing employment in OECD countries
Comparing OECD countries, we seek to determine whether the decline in manufacturing employment is primarily due to: Offshoring (trade with emerging countries); Technological progress (productivity gains); Product sophistication (skills, automation); Labour costs (hourly wages). We find that only automation has a significant positive effect on manufacturing employment: robots do not destroy employment in industry - they boost it.
