U.S. August employment report: Are wages finally accelerating?

Key points: U . S . job gains recovered in August, increasing by a solid 201K after 1 47 K in July. Net revisions were negative and the unemployment rate remained stable with a declining participation rate. But the most noteworthy point of the report is that wages posted a sharp positive surprise, increasing by 2.9% on a yearly basis (the fastest pace in the cycle) . Yet, o ne should keep in mind that average hourly earnings can be volatile and that so far the upward trend in wages remains moderate . As for monetary policy prospects, today’s report should push further up the odds of having four rate hikes this year. However, the gradual tightening mode is likely to stay on .
