Von der Leyen and Lagarde: Europe sets its way forward

Heads of state of the EU's 28 members finally agreed to propose German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen for the presidency of the European Commission after lengthy negotiations lasting several days. The succession of Jean-Claude Juncker was the most difficult point to solve because decisive for the identity of the other European "top jobs". The European Council has also elected its President, who will be Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel from 1 December 2019 to 31 May 2022. The Spanish Foreign Minister has been nominated to be High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Finally, one of the most important conclusions of the summit is the decision of the Council to consider the current IMF head Christine Lagarde as “appropriate candidate for the presidency of the European Central Bank" .
