What are the reasons for concern in Italy?
We believe that in Italy: There is no reason to be concerned about an exit from the euro, given the massive size of Italy’s gross external debt in euros; There is no reason be concerned about an excessive fiscal deficit, given the impact of market discipline on long-term interest rates; But there is reason to fear another political crisis, given the coalition’s inability to improve Italy’s economic situation.
