What the breakdown of the causes of CO2 emissions tells us

We can break down growth in CO 2 emissions (for OECD countries, emerging countries and for the world) between: GDP growth ; The trend in the ratio ; The trend in the ratio . This breakdown of CO 2 emissions shows us that their excessively rapid global growth relative to the climate targets is explained by: The fact that CO 2 emissions follow energy consumption in OECD and emerging countries very closely; The fact that in emerging countries, CO 2 emissions are grow ing at a rate of 70% of GDP, and that GDP is grow ing by 4 % per year. Considerable energy savings would be needed in emerging countries to reduce CO 2 emissions with 4% growth.
