Why is inflation a problem?
As inflation reaches very high levels in OECD countries after COVID and with the war in Ukraine, and central banks begin to worry about it, we seek to determine why inflation is a problem. The arguments normally used to show that inflation is dangerous are as follows: Inflation affects recipients of incomes that are poorly indexed to inflation (currently wages, income from savings in bonds); it therefore generates unfair and undesirable income transfers; I nflation is a hidden tax for the benefit of the state, and is therefore not democratic; Inflation creates distortions in relative prices that are not due to scarcity (a supply-demand imbalance), but to the ability to adjust prices.
