Bloomberg is reporting that Charter is working with advisors to explore an acquisition of Altice. We are taking the story seriously, though we believe that Altice’s leverage and operational challenges make a deal difficult. We think there are very limited circumstances under which a deal would be feasible. Our quick thoughts in this brief note.

Altice USA is a holding company. Through its subsidiaries, the company provides broadband communications and video services and markets its services primarily under two brands: Optimum, in the New York metropolitan area, and Suddenlink, principally in markets in the south-central United States. The company delivers broadband, video, and telephony services to the residential and business customers. The company also provides fiber connectivity, bandwidth and managed services to enterprise customers through its Lightpath business (also marketed as Altice Business) and the company provides advertising time and services to advertisers. Charter Communications is a holding company. Through its subsidiaries, the company is a cable operator and a broadband communications company providing video, Internet and voice services. The company also provides its mobile service to residential customers. In addition, the company sells video and online advertising inventory to local, regional and national advertising customers and communications and managed solutions to enterprise customers. The company also owns and operates regional sports networks and local sports, news and community channels. The company owns and operates a two-way telecommunications network which passes various households and small and medium businesses across United States.
