BEAD and “Non-Deployment” Funds: Is AI the Path Forward?
The biggest financial question now with BEAD is whether the $20+ billions no longer necessary to connect unserved and underserved locations will be returned to the federal Treasury or spent by the states on other broadband related purposes. Governor Landry, the Republican Governor of Louisiana, just sent a letter to the Department of Commerce proposing have the states keep the money but restrict the use to AI related purposes. In this note, we assess the likelihood of success of the effort.
