Shanghai could be on the cusp of a second major lockdown this year as the BA.5 Omicron sub-variant has been detected and the national number of daily reported cases has risen from ~100 to ~400. We show that the latest academic studies suggest that the BA.5 variant is highly immune evasive, meaning that high vaccine coverage may be of little help to global economies. Given reinfection is happening so regularly, there are potential implications for global productivity and supply chains.
