May US Auto Sales – Further Evidence for Market Weakness

US auto sales dipped 0.5% YoY to 1.51mil vehicles in May, as rising demand for light trucks (+6% YoY) was not sufficient to offset weaker passenger car sales (-9.3% YoY); dsr-adjusted sales fell by 4.4% YoY. Sales results and May’s SAAR level of 16.66mil units came in below expectations. It was the third month in a row with a SAAR level of below 17mil units. A further sign of deteriorating conditions were the rise in incentives, up 9.5% YoY, according to ALG estimates.
Analyst Julie Boote discusses key factors behind the performance of the Japanese makers. Included in the report is a table showing the performance for all automakers and a chart of SAAR trends.
