The LCP Opportunity in High-end Handsets

From nothing, liquid crystal polymer (LCP) is set to become a US$2.5bil business for the handset supply chain within three years – and that is just from the iPhone. As Murata’s (6981 JP) new multilayer resin substrate MetroCirc becomes available for Android or alternatives are commercialized, the market size should increase considerably. Within the Japanese stock market, the benefits are somewhat diluted because of the existing scale of the companies involved in the LCP supply chain, as well as the fact that some of them are losers from the shift away from polyimide.
This report discusses the competitive position of LCP and prospects for MetroCirc. It is intended as a companion report to other recent PSA reports on Murata: our Oct 2, 2018 report ‘Stretching the MLCC Market – Implications’ and our Oct 4, 2018 report, ‘Does “Murata good, Skyworks / Avago / Qorvo better” still hold true?’
