Murata (6981) - Module Recovery Expected But Roadblocks Exist

There is much debate as to whether Murata’s current difficulties in the RF space are temporary. The failure of Murata to win a single FEM socket in 2017 North American handset models has made the discussion highly relevant but excessively binary. Our core thesis that Murata has the tools to recover on the module side remains in place. However, this report, which follows on from March’s Murata: Focus Shifts to Turnings Around Module Business, outlines the potential roadblocks that are emerging to the recovery scenario.

Key Points

  • Murata is currently struggling in both piezo and communications modules, with piezo hurt by overstocking of SAW in China, and modules hurt by a failure to win RF module business in North America
  • The bull case has Murata’s investment in IHP SAW and MetroCirc aiding recovery in module business as front end moves to 4x4 MIMO
  • Roadblocks do exist, including development of tunable SAW
  • There is also concern that Murata has less time than thought to turn around the module business, if discrete SAW market already disappearing
