Weekly Comment by Pelham Smithers
10 Stocks for the Fourth Quarter (and Beyond)
Is it time to sell Sony? This question has arisen as a result of Sony’s capitulation over cross-play for Fortnite. At a basic level, the answer is “No”. The company is on course to hit ¥1tril in OP in the next 3~5 years, which means that a ¥10,000 share price target is not out of the question. However, it is fair to say that the arguments in favour of the stock are well known and the shares have done very well. Sell-side investors and analysts alike have looked through the dour mid-term target report and seen a company doing well on a number of fronts. The stock has momentum and is probably front stage for day-traders. It is not so easy a call for longer-term players, however, for whom the risk / reward ratio has been shifting considerably over the past eighteen months.
At this point, it would not be surprising for Sony to produce strong 2Q numbers on October 31 and for the shares to subsequently come under profit-taking. What would happen if Sony were to disappoint?
