PSA Technology: 5G Rollout and Implications of the Huawei Debate

To understand 5G, explains Pelham Smithers, you have to start with the basic point that it is not simply a mobile network system, but a high-speed data transfer system. The 2Gbps chip that Huawei (pvt.) unveiled at MWC2018 is 20x faster than standard fibre, which means that if you want super-high-speed data transfer, then the future is not fibre, but wireless. At this point, it still isn’t clear what the fallout for Huawei is going to be; the US arrest of Huawei’s CFO is not to do with espionage but with suspected Iran sanctions breaches. While this could simply prove expensive – companies can be fined heavily for this – it could also lead to market disbarment. What would be the consequences, and are there opportunities for the likes of NEC, TDK and Anritsu? Pelham and materials analyst Joel Scheiman consider the pros and cons
