Weekly Market Comment by Pelham Smithers
Is Blockchain Overhyped?
Nouriel Roubini, a professor at NYU’s Stern School of Business, has published a damning appraisal of blockchain, which can be found at https://goo.gl/1EpkhG. Claiming that blockchain is one of the most overhyped technologies ever, he posits that:
1. Often what is claimed to be a blockchain is just the running of a software application that is replicated across many devices.
2. Blockchain verification makes them slow and heavy energy consumers.
3. Claims of blockchain disintermediation – eg replacing cloud computing – are in many cases far-fetched.
4. Financial institutions would never use blockchains like Ethereum because they are too slow and can’t handle the necessary volume.
5. As blockchains rely on existing protocols like TCP-IP, how can they replace such protocols as a new “universal protocol”?
6. Blockchain store every valid communication that has ever been sent to them; this creates a scaling problem that has not been resolved and is unlikely too for a long time.
7. Blockchain won’t eliminate intermediaries, because it still requires a referee, either in cases where one party looks to deliberately modify the blockchain, or when unforeseen contingencies occur (as often happens in securitization).
8. As for the three main systems in place today, Bitcoin is a slow energy-inefficient dinosaur, Ethereum is vulnerable to manipulation, and Ripple will lose out to either Swift or non-Blockchain centralized e-payment systems such as AliPay and Square.
