Smartphone Outlook for 2017

For all the brouhaha over the Note 7, and for all the Apple production issues at the start of the year, 2016 ended up as a pretty decent year for the industry as a whole – with a wide range of performance on a company by company basis.
The key question now for 2017’s rollout is whether the handset industry has simply pushed its problems from 2016 out a year, or else whether, having crawled through the wreckage of 2016, the industry can now move forward.
In this report we look at the offerings and strategies of the main handset suppliers and discuss the most recent developments in key features for smartphones: for the screen, the camera, the front-end module, the battery, and sensors.
We discuss the trends in the bill of materials (BoM) which, thanks to Apple, looks to be rising. This is good news for the Apple supply chain. We expect this trend to be followed by Apple’s competitors, making this a good year in general for the supply chain.
Whether this increase in the BoM is reflected in higher ASPs will determine whether this is also a good year for handset makers.
