Sony (6758) – New PS Vue Ad Campaign as YouTube TV Unrolled

Given the absence of star players from Saturday Mar 11th’s “showpiece” Spurs/ Warriors game on ABC, it is quite possible that not many people saw the new ad campaign for PlayStation Vue. Still, the campaign is out there, and for good reason – Google (GOOGL US) has unveiled a highly competitive rival to the Sony offering: YouTube TV. Details are still emerging but essentially Google is later this Spring rolling out a 44-channel offering for US$35, undercutting Sony’s US$40-for-45-channel basic price. As is always the case, it is not possible to make perfect comparisons, because the various services offer different channels and different streaming set-ups. What is clear is that YouTube TV is set to be competitive where it can hurt PlayStation Vue the most – with sports fans.
FCC New Appointee Spells End to Net Neutrality
YouTube TV isn’t the only piece of bad news for Sony’s cord-cutting service. The appointment of Ajit Pai as the new head of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) potentially spells an end to net neutrality. In a speech last week, he gave his strongest indication yet that he will seek to roll back the FCC’s strong net neutrality rules. These protect the open internet by preventing broadband providers from blocking or throttling or providing fast lanes to particular sites and services. Without those rules, the FCC would have no power to protect competition in internet video services. As a case in point, he has already given the green light to AT&T and Verizon to exempt their own video services from data caps they apply to their rivals.
