The Forthcoming 5G Revolution

Although 5G is itself evolutionary in nature, with many of the concepts already being developed during this 4G era, the fact that it is set to coincide with the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine chatter is set to make it revolutionary.
In this report, analyst Pelham Smithers provides us with a fascinating and detailed roadmap to 5G. Taking readers through the various stages of network development, he explains what 5G is and how it might be delivered. A number of interesting points that come up include whether there will be a need for landlines at all; in markets where spectrum is up for auction, we could see a range of suppliers appearing, helping corporates looking to go asset-light.
Identifying winners and losers at this stage is something of a fool’s errand, because the companies may not even exist, let alone have a sufficient market presence to provide an investment opportunity. However, several big name Japanese firms look well placed to benefit from the move to 5G: these are SoftBank (9984), Murata (6981), KDDi (9433) and TDK (6762), plus some niche players such as IIJ (3774) and Hearts United (3676).
