US Auto Sales September 2016 - Flat September Sales Indicate a Plateauing for 2016

US auto sales fell 0.5% YoY to 1.43mil vehicles in September, with SAAR stabilising at 17.76mil units (still slightly above last year’s annual sales). Automakers did not seem overly concerned about sales flattening out, since demand for light trucks remains firm for the time being (+7.7% YTD / +4.5% YoY in September). The question whether 2016 sales will top 2015 results or not is not particularly relevant at this stage; automakers must know that the growth stage is coming to an end after seven strong years and that competitive new models, incentives and marketing campaigns will once again become more important in determining volume growth.

In this report, analyst Julie Boote provides a comment on the performance of the Japanese automakers.
Also included in this report is a table showing the performance of all automakers and a graphs of the SAAR.
