US Auto Sales August - Double Digit Sales Decline for Passenger Cars Drags Down Market

US auto sales declined 4.2% in August to 1.5mil vehicles (or by 3.6%, if adjusted for Fiat Chrysler’s change in last year’s count). It was a disappointing month for the US auto industry, although the poor YoY performance can be partly explained by the lack of the Labor Day sales week-end (which falls into September). SAAR dropped to 17mil units from 17.88mil in July. There is now increasing concern that US sales could indeed decline this calendar year, due to the weakness of the passenger car market (YTD down 8.4% YoY).
