MARKETS YESTERDAY AND TODAY

Market recovery
Tuesday’s profit taking came to an end and European stock markets recovered part of the ground lost following a +1.0% rally. In general, growth sectors in the Euro STOXX took over, with Retail and Consumer Goods leading gains while Real Estate and Utilities were the worst performers. On the macroeconomic level, in Germany, the Constitutional Court rejected the appeal against the ratification of the recovery plan for the European aid programme, which no longer face any obstacles from that end. In the UK, March’s inflation rose slightly less than expected but production prices climbed far above expectations. Separately, the European Covid-19 passport will not guarantee mobility across EU countries, as this is considered discriminatory (the WHO is also against this measure). Meanwhile, Italy will begin to lift restrictions on 26 April and Draghi has announced an investment of € 221 Bn via the European Recovery Plan to boost the Italian economy (high-speed train, green energies, etc…). In the US, the pace of vaccination has fallen drastically in the last week (-11%). Separately, the Republicans warned that they will not negotiate an increase in the debt ceiling if it does not come with spending cuts. Lastly, Canada is the first developed country whose central bank has begun to reduce debt purchases. In US business results, Baker Huges and Halliburton came in better than expected, and Verizon in line.
What we expect for today
European stock markets would open with gains of around +0.5%, led by value, replicating the move in the US yesterday. Currently, S&P futures are down -0.1% (the S&P 500 ended up +0.28% vs. its price at the closing bell in Europe). Volatility in the US fell (VIX 17.50). Asian markets are trading with mixed results (China’s CSI 300 -0.1% and Japan’s Nikkei +2.06%).
Today the ECB will meet. In the US we will learn March’s weekly jobless claims and home sales, in Mexico March’s unemployment rate and February’s retail sales. In US business results, American Airlines and Biogen, among others, will release their earnings. Debt auctions: Spain (€ 6 Bn in bonds due 2024, 2027 and 2031).
