MARKETS YESTERDAY AND TODAY

Peripheral indices standing out
The IBEX 35 and Italian MiB were the best-performing European indices in a mixed (and relatively stable) session once more marked by comments made by Fed members suggesting between 2 and 4 rate rises (Evans and Daly) or even 5 according to Waller (depending on inflation) and that was the excuse to drag down US technology groups. Thus, in the Euro STOXX, the best-performing sectors were Basic Materials (for the second straight day) and Autos, whereas Consumer Goods and Pharma were the worst relative performers. On the macro side, in the euro zone the ECB meeting minutes showed recovery that remains on track, but with constant problems from the supply chain, rising prices and the Omicron variant. In the US, weekly jobless claims rose more than expected and December’s production prices rose less than expected, recording their smallest monthly rise in 13 months (suggesting peak inflation may have already been reached). In China, the trade surplus beat expectations in December, hitting a record high in exports and confirming the external sector as the growth driver in 2021.
What we expect for today
European stock markets would open with drops of as much as -1.0%, led by technology groups and with the eyes set on the 4Q’21 results of US banks, mainly after the significant performance of the sector at the beginning of the year. Currently, S&P futures are up +0.17% (the S&P 500 ended -0.68% lower vs. its level at the European closing bell). Volatility in the US rose (VIX 20.31). Asian markets are sliding (China’s CSI 300 -0.7% and Japan’s Nikkei -1.3%).
Today in Spain we will learn December’s final inflation and in the US December’s industrial output and retail sales, November’s business inventories and January’s University of Michigan consumer confidence. In US business results, BlackRock, JP Morgan, Citigroup and Wells Fargo will release their earnings, among others. In ratings, Moody’s will review Spain’s rating (Baa1, stable) and Fitch that of Greece (BB, stable).
