IBERIAN DAILY 21 MAY (ANÁLISIS BANCO SABADELL)

NEWS SUMMARY: N/A.

IBEX hits 2008 high
European stock markets continued to rise, despite the fact that the negotiations between Trump and Putin would be putting more pressure on Europe than on Russia. Despite the rally on the STOXX 600, defensive sectors like Utilities and Telecoms led the gains, whereas Financial Services and Technology were two of the few sectors ending in the red. On the macro side, in the euro zone May’s preliminary consumer confidence recovered slightly more than expected, although still in negative numbers. On the geopolitical front, the EC is mulling a reduction to the maximum price on Russian oil transported by sea to US$ 50/barrel from the current US$ 60 in order to force Russia to sign a peace treaty with Ukraine. In the US, Trump will meet with House Republicans (the party still holds a 220-213 majority in the House) to reach an agreement on the tax cut bill. On the commercial front, the G-7 is studying the implementation of tariffs on cheap products imported from China (Temu, Shein, etc). On the geopolitical front, Israel would be preparing an attack on nuclear facilities in Iran. In US business results, Home Depot released earnings slightly below expectations and Palo Alto slightly better.
What we expect for today
European stock markets would open with a slightly bearish slant, but with the oil sector benefiting from the Brent crude rally. Currently, S&P futures are down -0.3% (the S&P 500 ended -0.1% lower vs. the European closing bell). Asian markets are mixed (China’s CSI 300 +0.7% and Japan’s Nikkei -0.3%).
Today in the UK we will learn April’s general and core inflation and in Mexico March’s retail sales. In US business results, Medtronic, TJX and Lowe's Companies, among others, will release their earnings.
