IBERIAN DAILY 19 APRIL + 1Q’24 RESULTS. PREVIEWS (ANÁLISIS BANCO SABADELL)

NEWS SUMMARY: NATURGY.

At the end of today’s report, and during the entire results season, we will include a presentation with positive and negative results highlights and previews for the 1Q’24 results to be released over the coming days in Spain.

The Ibex is the best-performing index in the euro zone once more
It was a session without relevant macroeconomic references, where the attention was drawn to the tension in the Middle East amid fears that the conflict could increase. Meanwhile, the earnings season kicked off in Spain with Bankinter, which was positive for banks and fuelled the Ibex once more. In the STOXX 600, Banks and Utilities led gains vs. the bigger drops of Technology and Financial Services. On the macro side, in the US, April’s Philadelphia Fed index climbed above expectations, March’s existing home sales dropped more than expected and weekly jobless claims fell, contrary to expectations. Meanwhile, there was a deluge of comments by members of the Fed (Williams, Bostic, Mester and Bowman) delaying the start of rate cuts to the end of the year. In Japan, March’s general and core inflation slowed slightly more than expected. On the geopolitical front, Israel attacked Iran with drones near Isfahan, where the country’s nuclear facilities are located. In US business results, Blackstone and Netflix came in above expectations, KeyCorp worse than expected. The Taiwanese company TSMC released better results than expected, but lowering chip demand for all of 2024.
What we expect for today
Following Israel’s drone attack to Iran, stock markets would open with drops >-1.0% in an aversion-risk move, with the oil sector underpinned by the hike in Brent crude. Currently, S&P futures are down -0.90% (the S&P 500 ended down -0.62% vs. the European closing bell). Asian stock markets are sliding (China’s CSI 300 -0.84%, Japan’s Nikkei -2.59%).
Today in the UK we will learn March’s retail sales and in Mexico February’s retail sales. In US business results, Procter&Gamble and American Express, among others, will release their earnings.
