Azerbaijan Update - Back in Baku
When we previously visited Azerbaijan, in March of last year, the country was just starting to emerge from a sharp downturn that had seen GDP growth turn negative and the national currency plummet in what turned out to be a chaotic devaluation. We returned to Baku recently and came away with a distinctly more upbeat impression: higher oil prices have given Azerbaijan some breathing room, GDP growth has turned positive, the exchange rate has stabilized, and a recapitalization of the banking sector is proceeding apace. BP, the key partner in developing the country's extensive oil and gas reserves, has signed on for another 25 years at the giant Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) oil field cluster in the Caspian.
