CIS Economic Digest - Positive Momentum Could Continue for Some Time
The countries in the CIS region - except for Russia and Belarus - showed quite positive economic dynamics in 1H19. Moreover, the tensions that resulted from political transition have eased in Ukraine, Armenia and Kazakhstan, boosting investors' confidence. Georgia's economy has proven resilient to negative shocks, as growth remained stable even though the number of Russian tourists has dropped since July due to the flight ban. Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan turned to fiscal measures to support the economy and both expanding social spending. All of these trends should support economic growth in the region for the remainder of 2019 and next year. Still, since global uncertainty is rising, the countries could face a decline in commodity prices and capital outflow, which would restrain growth.
