Georgia Economics - Modest Inflation and Softening Growth Prompt Monetary Easing

Georgia's National Bank (NBG) cut the key policy rate for a second time this year, by 25 bps, on March 13. The bank cited modest inflation readings (inflation remains below the target) as the main reason for the cut, though other factors, such as the stability of the lari and softening economic growth in light of falling FDI and weakening investment activity, could be at play too. The bank began the easing cycle last July but halted it in 2H18 due to increased FX volatility. The lari has stabilized since the beginning of the year, though it remains quite sensitive to EM currency volatility, particularly in the Turkish lira and Russian ruble.
