Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan Trip Notes - External Resilience Continues to Grow, Along with State Influence
We are generally upbeat about the near-term prospects for the economies of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan after meeting with government and company representatives on a recent trip. Higher oil prices, together with increased oil and gas production, have given the economies a tailwind and allowed the countries to rebuild their fiscal buffers and improve their external positions. If oil prices stay close to $70/bbl this year, as we expect, we think both these processes will continue. That said, higher oil prices have reduced the need for reforms.
