MSCI Annual Market Classification Preview - Saudi Arabia and Argentina
MSCI will announce the results of its annual market classification review after 23:30 Moscow time tonight. The main questions this year are whether to include Saudi Arabia and Argentina in the MSCI EM in 2019. We would not expect the inclusion of either market to have a material effect on mandatory allocations to Russia, though we see potential longer-term effects for Russia of the entry of another, similarly sized market with a heavy emphasis on hydrocarbons and finance. Meanwhile, the weight of China A shares in the MSCI EM is due to double in the August 2018 rebalancing regardless of the decisions on Saudi Arabia and Argentina, and the results are due soon on one of two current client consultations with some potential relevance for the Russian market.
