Tajikistan Economic Update. August 9, 2018 - Going All In
Tajikistan is going all in on a hydropower project, the massive Rogun dam, that was begun back during the Soviet era but never brought to completion. The project is a major priority for the government - and will certainly bring economic benefits - but it comes at an enormous cost and will require significant external funding. While we expect it to help bump GDP growth up to 8% this year, we see it pushing external debt close to 80% of GDP in the next few years.
