The Morning Track easy

- The Morning Track - Easy? by Bob Savage

Being successful is never easy. So it goes for today where the economic data is light – better German Factory Orders, stable China Services PMI and the usual keen focus on politics. Finding the trend or the driver for markets and holding onto it isn’t easy. The Trump Administration has been frustrated in its immigration policy by the courts. Perhaps more chilling, the Iranians continue to tests missile and radar systems disregarding new restrictions from the US Treasury on 12 entities and 13 individuals. The French political scene heats up with Fillon news conference and Le Pens many points speech – with immigration and globalization rants. In Germany SPD closes in on Merkel’s CDU/CSU 29% to 33%. The role of markets maybe in scoring the animal spirits not just of investors but of voters as well. The confusing mix of rates and politics leave focus this week on central bankers again – RBA and RBNZ along with plenty of emerging markets with RBI expected to ease a
nd Mexico expected to tighten. The biggest event maybe in the Abe/Trump meetings Friday with the balancing act of JPY in play as rates in the US watch for a break out again while the JPY seems set for 110 return – something that breaks the correlations that worked well 4Q but not now. The role of rates to JPY to equities is also worth considering but more 4Q earning this week may also matter more. Overall we are all watching JPY at 112 to see if it matters.
