Valens Equity Weekly Insights - 2023 04 25

Infinera Corporation (INFN) has transformed its profitability profile through its development of pluggable modules and its shift in focus to shorter length data transmission. Uniform Accounting highlights that the market is pricing in a plateau in returns growth, but management is confident about executing on their strategy and is aligned to continue to do so, signaling the potential for equity upside as the company continues seeing returns improve.

Infinera has historically seen low returns as it focused on long-haul optical data transmission. Since it introduced pluggable modules that increase data speed for shorter distances, it has seen an inflection in its returns, with Uniform ROA reaching its highest level in 2022 since 2015. If the company is able to continue growing its more profitable pluggable business, it should be able to beat market expectations.

Infinera's management is closely aligned to focus on top line growth, decrease operating costs, and sell higher-margin products, which should drive profitability expansion and key to Infinera's equity upside scenario.

Management confidence in the Q4 earnings call about expense management and sales growth of new products suggest management is positioned to execute above market expectations.

In 2009, just as the dust was settling from the last major equity and credit market crises, we launched a boutique research firm with the intention of breaking Wall Street’s biases and broken incentives:

  • GAAP and IFRS have failed to provide rules for reliable financial statement reporting
  • Stock analyst recommendations are not grounded in disciplined financial analysis
  • Credit agencies have been set up to grossly fail in their responsibilities to investors and the public markets
  • Utter lack of willingness of major research firms to employ the the most advanced forensic analysis available

We sought to provide investors and company analysts with a source of information that changed all that.
Many years later, our business model remains because little has changed on Wall Street.

  • Corporate credit ratings remain years behind the fundamental underpinnings of company performance
  • Stock analysts continue to make recommendations with deeply inherent biases
  • Research firms have failed to break down the walls between credit, equity, and macroeconomic research
  • The governing accounting bodies have created more leeway for mis-estimates and mis-classifications as financials have become unwieldy and overwhelming

The integrity of Valens Research is founded in our disciplined processes and analytics. No “star” analysts. No corporate advisory relationships. No-nonsense opinions and recommendations.
