Vermilion Short Shots: Technically Vulnerable Stocks

The “Energy” to Move Higher

Let's face it, The Energy Sector has been for the most part a losing bet over the last 3 1/2 years. Bottoming is a process that often takes time, especially when technology drives down the cost to produce a product. In the case of oil and natural gas, fracking has led to an onslaught of drilling and an overabundance of supply and a virtual free-fall in energy prices beginning in early January of ‘16. However, through the onslaught, companies have now right-sized themselves with expectations of lower prices, reduced cap-ex spending, and reduced supply.

Key Points:

• Bases are present in a majority of the E&P's, with many breaking above resistance levels. A number of issues are breaking to 52-week price and RS highs.

• Breadth is improving with 55% of Energy related names ranking in the top 33% of the market as measured by our proprietary RSR ranking system,.
In this report we focus on the E&P's but there are a number of service related names that we also find attractive. Many of these can be found in grids of the Russell 1000 and 2000 in Tuesdays Compass.

Names highlighted include: XOM, CVX, COP, EOG, OXY, PXD, APC, CXO, DVN, CLR, APA, HES, NBL, COG, MRO, FANG, PE, WPX, MUR, PDCE, MTDR, VNOM, SM, CPE, WLL, CRZO, CRC, REN, and WTI.
