WOOD Flash – EMEA airlines: 7M22 traffic, strong travel demand driving fares, cheaper fuels leading to a share rebound

The summer travel season is in full swing. A number of airlines have been revising their pricing guidance for the quarter upwards in recent weeks. As oil prices have eased, aviation stocks have joined the broader market rally, and the MSCI Europe Airlines index is up by 18% since the end of June. Total capacity in Europe is around 85-90% of the 2019 level this summer, with low-cost carriers (LCCs) leading the rebound and gaining market share. The disruption seen in previous months and weeks seems to be easing gradually: the number of cancellations appears to have peaked at the beginning of the summer and has been declining gradually since. We expect the market to focus increasingly on pricing in the coming weeks.
