Turkish Banks: Action is their middle name (Akbank & Vakifbank upgraded to BUY; Garanti stays BUY; Yapi Kredi upgraded to HOLD; Halkbank & Isbank stay HOLD)

As they go through one of the roughest patches in the past couple of years, we find compelling value among the Turkish banks. In our view, a soft landing is the most likely macro outcome, and stagflation, which we deem the only scenario to justify the current valuations, is an unlikely risk. There is no reason to be sanguine on asset quality, but our research shows that the growth in the corporate profitability that accompanied the leverage may be underestimated. In our view, the cost of risk (COR) is unlikely to get out of hand, even in a meagre GDP growth scenario. We have three BUYs among the six large listed banks: Akbank, Garanti and Vakifbank. We believe Isbank (HOLD), Halkbank (HOLD) and Yapi Kredi (HOLD) are not necessarily expensive, but are less compelling on the basis of our current assumptions and the prevailing backdrop.
