WOOD Flash – Romania: Frontier Days conference takeaways (5-7 September)
We attended the Frontier Investor Days 2018 in Bucharest on 5-7 September, which we hosted in conjunction with Fondul Proprietatea and Franklin Templeton Investments.In our view, the general highlights of the conference were that, over the past 10 years, Romania’s economy has improved significantly, in terms of both competitiveness and GDP per capita, as well as risk resilience in case of a crisis. However, the evolution of the past one-to-two years has diverged, adding again to the risks, with widening twin deficits, wage pressure from the public sector and the higher risk of tax increases. The political message is that the state is continuing to support corporate governance and the setting up of the Sovereign Fund, although both are still to be seen in practice.
