VZ/FBYR/CPUC Update: Build Out Requirements Remain an Issue

In a recent analysis of an Administrative Law Judge issuing a Proposed Decision recommending California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approval of the VZ/FYBR deal, albeit with numerous conditions, we focused on the conditions related to the tension between VZ’s letter to the FCC changing its policies toward DEI and requirements under California law and regulation, as that has been the key discussion point in the process to date. We noted but did not focus on the build-out requirement in pa...

Cellnex vs. Telefonica Cellnex (Buy, €34, +32%) Telefonica (Reduce, ...

On Wednesday, we published our European Telecoms Year Ahead note for 2026. In that note, we upgraded Cellnex to a Buy, as we think the market’s worst fears on growth are overdone, and we downgraded Telefonica to a Reduce, as we fear the low cashflow growth outlook is not being properly priced in. However, in that sector report, we missed out one important aspect to back up this diverging view of value and we now highlight that here.

VZ: Investor meeting key takeaways

We hosted a Verizon investor lunch yesterday. We feel we came away with a clearer understanding of the evolving ‘Dan Plan’. Long story short, the chances of VZ ‘burning down the neighborhood’ are far lower than generally feared. This fear has nevertheless been priced into sector stocks, which may present an opportunity across the sector.

European Telecoms for 2026 Industry action required for further outpe...

Over the past 3 years, the EU telecoms sector has had a great run – up >50%, despite modest underlying revenue/ EBITDA growth. This has almost entirely come from a deserved upwards re-rating in the multiple as the risk profile across the sector diminishes – which has been a key theme of ours in the past few years given improved regulation. So, we feel this has now largely played out.

Vodafone (Buy, 120p, +26%) Safaricom buyout: More FCF accretive than ...

Vodafone and Vodacom have announced today that they will be taking control of Safaricom. Given the structure of the deal with Kenyan Government involving pre-paying dividends, we think the deal could offer better than expected accretion to Vodafone’s reported FCF for limited capital outflow.

Can VZ Reduce Churn and Improve Performance with a Delete, Delete, Del...

A big issue affecting all mobile carriers is churn. One way to reduce churn is by creating friction for customers seeking to change carriers in transferring their phone to a different carrier. VZ, due to a 2007 commitment, is at a disadvantage relative to T and TMUS. VZ is seeking to change that rule, arguing that the rule not only creates an unfair playing field but also increases its costs and creates opportunities for fraud. In this note, we describe the current state of play for whether VZ...

Vodafone (Buy, 120p, +30%) H1 26 - Multiple re-rating in play

Vodafone has reported a decent set of H1 results and guidance has been moved to the upper-end of the guidance range (albeit us and consensus were already there). We think there is still a story for the multiple to be re-rated further – and even though there is new dividend guidance today, we also think there is potential for incremental cash return to come at the FY results.
