W.R. Berkley is a well-run insurer operating in attractive niches.
W.R. Berkley’s second-quarter results were not particularly impressive, but excluding some catastrophe losses, results were on par with recent experience, and there was some incremental improvement in the expense ratio, the metric on which we are most focused. Net premiums written were up 6% year over year, suggesting that management continues to see an adequate pipeline of attractive business. The combined ratio crept up modestly to 94.9% from 94.2% last year, but this was primarily due to high...W. R. Berkley is an insurance holding company. The company operates in two segments of the property casualty insurance business: Insurance, which includes commercial insurance business, including excess and surplus lines, admitted lines and specialty personal lines throughout the United States, as well as insurance business in the United Kingdom, Continental Europe, South America, Canada, Mexico, Scandinavia, Asia and Australia; and Reinsurance, which provides reinsurance business on a facultative and treaty basis, primarily in the United States, the United Kingdom, Continental Europe, Australia, the Asia-Pacific region and South Africa.
