W.R. Berkley’s first-quarter results were a little soft, reflecting some industry headwinds and investments the company is making. The net result was an annualized ROE of 9.8% for the quarter, representing only a very slight spread above our estimate of the cost of equity. Given W.R. Berkley’s underwriting discipline and a weakening pricing environment, we would expect the company’s performance to falter a bit in the current environment, but continue to believe that the company is well-positione...W. The company operates in two segments of the property casualty insurance business: Insurance, which includes commercial insurance business, including excess and surplus lines, admitted lines and specialty personal lines throughout the United States, as well as insurance business in the United Kingdom, Continental Europe, South America, Canada, Mexico, Scandinavia, Asia and Australia; and Reinsurance, which provides reinsurance business on a facultative and treaty basis, primarily in the United States, the United Kingdom, Continental Europe, Australia, the Asia-Pacific region and South Africa.
