A “digital and green” economy: The challenges for Europe

It seems clear that the COVID crisis is going to accelerate the euro-zone economy’s transformation into a “digital and green” economy, due to: Work ing from home, online consumption, online leisure, automation related to the reshoring of production; The acceleration in the energy transition. The risk for the euro zone is that this transformation may make it poorer, which will be the case if: Electronic products and internet services are imported and not manufactured in Europe; Equipment for the production of renewable energies is not manufactured in Europe and even the production of renewable energies is not carried out in Europe . If European production is insufficient, the transition to a “digital and green” economy will lead to a fresh wave of offshoring in the euro zone, as demand shifts towards imported goods and services.
